Course Outline
Unit 1 – Popular Culture
Students are introduced to:
- safe dance practice, elements of dance, biomechanical principles of movement, choreographic processes and design concepts
- exploration of dance in popular culture
- popular trends as well as the impact of media and technology on the evolution of popular dance
- a set solo routine, group choreography and structured improvisation skills
- contextual knowledge – case study investigation & dance language
- written and practical examinations.
Unit 2 – Youth Dance
Builds on content in Unit 1 – practical tasks and examinations included. Students are introduced to:
- creating dance that explores contexts, original concepts and expresses personal ideas
- developing artistic expression and performance abilities in various dance styles among youth
- performances at Mindarie Senior College’s annual Arts Night and Dance Showcase.
Minimum Entrance Requirements
Previous dance experience is strongly recommended for success in the course, (especially contemporary/ballet/jazz). Contemporary dance is a major component of practical lessons for Year 12 ATAR Dance.
B grade in Year 10 English is desirable.
Please Note: This course requires high attendance and is not recommended for students with consistent injuries. Students’ technical abilities and suitability for the course will be assessed early in Term 1.
