Course Outline
Students in this course will also be part of the Surf Lifesaving Cadets programs.
This is a community funded program that offers an opportunity for students to develop valuable Surf Lifesaving Cadets skills and other aquatic based skills.
Semester 2 land-based skills.
This course focuses on building confidence in the outdoors and outdoor leadership.
Students learn about
- understand basic planning and organisational requirements.
- develop camping, survival and navigation skills.
- develop risk management principles, safe practice development and emergency response procedures.
- develop personal and interpersonal skills.
- increase their environmental awareness through the study of the natural environment, the concept of wilderness and the impact of technology.
- gain their Recreational Skippers Ticket.
Skills Outline
This may include stand up paddle boarding, snorkeling, abseiling/roping and rock climbing, camping and bush- craft, navigation, hiking, expedition planning and experience. The availability of resources and the specific expertise of the teacher will determine the experiences chosen for each class.
Students are required to attend expeditions during which they will be assessed on course outcomes. This includes two, 3-day expeditions and a 1-day excursion. Students will need to be organised to keep up with work in other courses and be mindful of when exams are scheduled.
Minimum Entrance Requirements
The ability to swim 200m continuously in open water for 5 minutes, and it is desired to have a passion for outdoor pursuits.
It is highly recommended students have a good level of fitness, as this course is physically challenging.
