Course Outline
This course is designed for students interested in pursuing a pathway to Health, Social and Community Services related TAFE courses and fields of employment.
Health Studies facilitates the development of knowledge, understanding and skills necessary to promote an understanding of the importance of personal and community action in promoting health.
The influence of social, environmental, economic and biological determinants of health is a key focus of the course.
Other course content includes the influence of beliefs, attitudes and values on health behaviour, and the importance of self-management and interpersonal skills in making healthy decisions.
The health issues examined are:
- dimensions of health
- lifestyle factors affecting health
- drug education
- health facilities and services
- mental health
- physical activity
- determinants of health
- community health
- decision making
- preventative health care
- physical activity and nutrition.
To complement the theoretical side of this course, students will participate in several practical sessions throughout the year, as well as having regular guest speakers.
