Course Outline

This course encourages students to be analytical, to participate in problem-solving and to systematically explore fascinating and intriguing aspects of living systems, from the microscopic level through to ecosystems. A unique appreciation of life and a better understanding of the living world are gained through studying Biology.

Students develop a range of practical skills and techniques through investigations and fieldwork.

Studying this course provides students with skills and understandings that are valuable to a wide range of further study pathways and careers. Understanding of biological concepts, as well as general science knowledge and skills, is relevant to a range of careers, including those in medical, veterinary, food and marine sciences, agriculture, biotechnology, environmental rehabilitation, biosecurity, quarantine, conservation and eco-tourism.

This course comprises of two units:

Unit 1 – Ecosystems and Biodiversity
Students develop an understanding of the processes in- volved in the movement of energy and matter in ecosystems. They study ecosystem dynamics, population numbers and species diversity, along with descriptions of species interactions. Students use classification systems for data collection, comparison and evaluation.

Unit 2 – From Single Cells to Multicellular Organisms
Students investigate the interdependent components of the cell system and the multiple interacting systems in multicellular organisms.
